I have many theories about fashion. I have many beloved handbags. And I have a few theories about fashion and handbags, one of which revolves around my other weakness, Japanese food. How do you wear a mustard bag?
Easy! Just like the way you approach eating mustard. Being such an overwhelming colour, you need to limit its presence in the total outfit, just like you would if you were putting mustard onto a meal. Show me one person who can heartily dig in to a plate of burning mustard as a main course, and I will show you a fashionista sister who can successfully pull off head to toe mustard in a look. Use this glorious spicy hue as a visual punctuation; as a condiment to your fashion ensemble. Whether it’s hot English ( Stella McCartney), American ( Marc Jacobs), Dijon ( Louis Vuitton), or even a cheerfully priced Master foods jar, use it sparingly as a potent flavour, but with intent.
Mustard as an accessory hue adds verve to a sombre winter outfit. It balances beautifully with navy and with aubergine. Add pop to basic black with bragbags' Long Bowler and to harmonize with an Autumnal palette of browns, ochres and reds. Teal and mustard can be perfect together in the right proportions and don’t be afraid to wear it with charcoal. The thing is, that its use should be limited to the one accessory. Don’t try to match it back with another part of the outfit, and certainly not your shoes. I don’t think we are ready for a mustard bag and shoes situation quite yet, no matter how much we love the look on Bruno.
The colour mustard needs to be focused in one area of the body, whether that is indeed bragbags' Vintage Clutch, or possibly your shoes, or gloves, a beret…whatever… and allowed to radiate through the outfit, spreading it’s warmth and vitality throughout what could otherwise be another dark and dreary winter ensemble. Just like hot English mustard on a steamed mud crab dim sim at my favourite Japanese restaurant, spreading an acute taste sensation to every mouthful.
So, this article complete, and the lesson du jour dutifully handed down, I’m heading off in my black wool flannel coat with a lovely new mustard bag slung over my shoulder, and picking a bottle of pinot gris on the way to Teriyaki Boy to put all these theories together in one evening! I can justify any fashion purchase. You can’t have too many gorgeous handbags or too many mud crab dim sims, as long as you always know what to put with them.
